Requirements

Prospective candidates for the ABC Professional Truck Driver Program must satisfy the admission criteria established by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) for obtaining a commercial driver license (CDL). These criteria include the following:


  • Age Requirement: Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years old for an intrastate CDL or 21 years old for an interstate CDL (see clarification below).
  • Valid Driver's License: Candidates must possess a valid Texas driver's license, free of any outstanding tickets or warrants.
  • Legal Authorization to Work: Applicants must provide either their original social security card or proof of legal eligibility to work in the United States.
  • English Language Proficiency: Candidates must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in reading and speaking the English language to successfully complete the mandatory pre-trip vehicle inspection and on-road driving portions of the DPS CDL skills test.
  • Residency Requirements: Candidates must meet the residency requirements outlined by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
  • Educational Qualifications: Applicants must hold a high school diploma, GED, or fulfill the Ability-to-Benefit requirements specified in this catalog.
  • DOT Physical Examinations: Students must undergo Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examinations.


Note: Criteria and requirements established by the Texas Department of Public Safety are subject to change without prior notice. Applicants should be prepared to meet any new criteria or requirements that may arise.
